Inertial Sensing for Biomechanics (and IROS 2017 debrief)

Current state-of-the-art human kinematic measurement involves a lab-based optical motion capture system, which can be cumbersome and expensive to use for general experiments. Inertial measurement units (IMUs) offer a small, low-cost, wearable alternative which can be deployed in a natural environment to measure human motion. Typical IMU-based human motion measurement methods suffer from inaccuracy and the need for precise placement of the sensors on a limb. The work presented will illustrate techniques to free the user from these tedious calibrations, which make the system easier to use for non-experts. This talk will also include a short debrief of IROS 2017 and work which relates to the MVL.
